What is democratic education?

There has been much discussion around the definition of democratic education.

In fact every democratic school is as unique as its body of students and staff. Nevertheless there are a few basic principles to which all democratic schools agree.

The 2005 International Democratic Education Conference, held in Berlin from 31 July to 6 August, attracted 200 participants from democratic schools in 28 different countries. These participants agreed upon the following statement:

We believe that, in any educational setting, young people have the right

  • to decide individually how, when, what, where and with whom they learn,
  • to have an equal share in the decision-making as to how their organisations - in particular their schools - are run, and which rules and sanctions, if any, are necessary.
